SpongeBob SquarePants BfBB is a SpongeBob-themed action game released by HandyGames in 2020. 3D platformers are a very popular genre now, and a game based on the popular SpongeBob SquarePants show released a game called SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, which quickly followed due to the breadth of the show and the quality of the gameplay gained followers. There's a lot of good nostalgia to tap here, whether it's from fans of the game or fans of the show. Not only is this remake a nostalgic advantage, but you’ll also find that this is a truly excellent game.
The story remains as untouched as possible, following a typical TV plot. It tells the story of sponges trying to save bikini bottoms from robots. Plankton is not good and causes a lot of problems for others. It's again trying to capture Krabby Patty's secret recipe. For his latest plan, Plankton intends to use his new Duplicatotron 3000 to build an army of robots. Unfortunately, he forgot to turn on the "obey" switch, which set the robot loose on the rampage. To save Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob must team up with Patrick and Sandy to take out all the robots and prevent plankton from stealing the formula.
The story of SpongeBob SquarePants BfBB appears as an extension of the show. The game perfectly captures all the humor and character of its quirky ensemble. Nearly all the original cast members reprise their roles in 2003, making for a truly authentic game. The gameplay follows the popular gameplay of 3D platformers. Instead of stars or gadgets, the crew travels from level to level in search of golden spatulas, which unlock new levels once the player finds enough of them. Usually, collecting all the golden scrapers also requires you to collect many other collectibles, like grabbing a few stolen artworks for a museum, or picking up enough top coins to pay Mr. Crabs.
Essentially, SpongeBob SquarePants BfBB is a game about collecting items, but the game does keep things fresh in various locations and makes sure no one is more than welcome. Many golden shaves are associated with the main quests in each area or earned by completing mini-games in each level. The gameplay follows the popular gameplay of 3D platformers. Usually, collecting all the golden scrapers also requires you to collect many other collectibles, like grabbing a few stolen artworks for a museum, or picking up enough top coins to pay Mr. Crabs. Levels are carefully designed with familiar characters to interact with. They're good at pushing the player forward, promising a golden scraper at the end of the level, and several others in between.
At the beginning of the player's journey, the player can only control SpongeBob SquarePants, his kit centered around his world-class bubble-blowing skills. Players can do things like roll a bubble bowling ball or smash enemies with a bubble viking hat. Patrick plays the "heavy" role here, and his main attraction is that he can pick up and throw various fruits or enemies to hit the switch and destroy the robot. Lastly is Sandy, who can defeat enemies with her kung fu and lasso skills and can glide long distances by wielding a lasso overhead. Overall, it feels like each character brings enough new technology to justify their existence, and everyone gets enough time in the spotlight, as levels often require players to switch playstyles.
The SpongeBob SquarePants BfBB game aptly represents the unique appeal of SpongeBob and his friends. Its strong level design, light tones and gorgeous reworked visuals make it a great game. Exploring the recreated set is a wonderful experience for any SpongeBob SquarePants fan, and the beautiful presentation and original voice actors ensure players stay immersed. Overall, it's an excellent SpongeBob-themed 3D game. It is worth downloading for fans who love SpongeBob SquarePants.
